A Media Entry – Fandom Rage

So I recently posted about how Jurassic World put a hole in my soul with its awfulness, mean-spiritedness, and almost insulting disregard of the original movie. Well, a friend of mine took a bit of umbrage with that entry, even though he didn’t disagree with my fifteen-minute summary. He said the entry sounded like the reason I disliked the movie so much was because I was in a fandom rage over the departures from the source material. He likened my reaction to those people who said the rebooted Ghostbusters was the worst thing in existence and it ruined their childhoods.

So I figured I’d better set the record straight.

Fifteen-minute Movie – Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

or, “Soooo, DC/WB doesn’t like money, I guess?”
or, “Soooo, DC/WB really hates Superman.”
or, “Soooo, DC/WB really hates Batman.”
or, “What A Long, Contrived Trip it’s Been.”

A Movie Entry – Riff-ability, Part 2

In which I continue my list of what kind of bad movies are the best to riff on.

A Movie Entry – Riff-ability, Part 1

There are discussions amongst film critics and fans on the criteria to judge a movie as good, or bad, or “so bad it’s good.” I don’t agree with the “so bad it’s good” camp because I believe bad is bad, but I do believe a movie can be so bad it’s fun to mock. Mocking badly made media is its own form of entertainment, and the premise of MST3K. So with that in mind, the revival coming soon, I present my general categories of bad movies and their suitability for riffing. Please note some bad movies crossover categories.

A TV/Movie Entry – Truly, Truly Outrageous

I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey. Let’s go back in time to the 1980s. It was a time of neon and pop music, of big hair and big egos, of memorable if lamentable fashion choices, when MTV still actually had something to do with music, and kids came home from school to watch cartoons all afternoon. I’ve already commented upon many such shows, and now here’s another. In the harmful tradition of gendered marketing, this is about a show to sell dolls that was aimed squarely at little girls who worshiped Madonna (the singer) and dressed like Cyndi Lauper – Jem.

A Movie Entry – Choose and Perish: Fight!

So let’s say that you want to watch a movie and either your choices are limited or your mental facilities are somewhat lessened for any of a dozen myriad reasons.  I’m not judging, just setting the up the scene.  And you stumble across a pair of movies that could provide you with a few hours of mild entertainment and/or significant riffing.  But which movie should you choose?  Perhaps I can help.

First up, you’ve got a hankering to watch a video game adaptation.  Again, I’m not judging.  I don’t know what evil lurks in the hearts of men (or women).  You want to watch a fighting game adapted to the big screen, and you’re a fan of old-school arcade games.  You have very specific tastes, my hypothetical movie-watcher.  So it comes down to these two movies, as it came down to these two games in the arcade as well – Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat.  Fight!

This is not a question of which is better, but which one you would enjoy more.

A Media Entry – Random Thoughts of the Mid-week Part 4: Rise of the Randomness

Again, my fevered hamster brain can’t focus on anything long enough for a full-on rant or praise, so please enjoy these tidbits of weirdness.
